A 21st Century Holmes and Watson

Watching BBC last night for the opening episode of the new Sherlock, you could be forgiven for thinking of Dr Who, well that’s not surprising as it was created by Dr Who writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.  If either matt Smith or new Sherlock Benedict Cumberbatch are off ill during filming either could brilliantly play the Dr or Sherlock!

Once you get past the strange parallel with the Dr Who personality of Sherlock, (he being the cleverest person in the room at any time!), you enter modern day London with Holmes and Watson, (Martin Freeman), and the Victorian characters blend brilliantly with the gritty London of today.

On paper, this just shouldn’t work but it does, which is a testament to the genius writing of Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle. The new series comes very soon after the Guy Ritchie film starring Robert Downey Jnr which was a huge success at the box office.

The new Holmes describes himself as a "consulting detective", the only one in the world - he invented the job. When the police are out of their depth, which is often, they call Sherlock.

The modernisation of the story sees Watson and Holmes calling each other by their first names, Sherlock and John, no one uses last names now do they! Watson’s stories are no longer for the Strand magazine but are told on his blog, which he writes as a therapy for his post-traumatic stress. 221b Baker Street is still Holmes’s residence where he gets a good deal on the rent after doing the landlady a favour.

The BBC production is as classy as you would expect a BBC drama to be, Cumberbatch plays Holmes as a highly intelligent individual with a razor sharp wit. We see Holmes and Watson first introduced to each other with the Doc looking for a flat share after being wounded in Afganistan. The two characters immediately spark off each other, which is straight out of the original stories.

The first story, ’A Study in Pink’, sees the eccentric detective join forces with Doctor Watson to solve a string of apparent suicides in London in 2010. Holmes is as ever one step in front of the police and solves the crime with Dr Watsons help. The police of course now have a team of forensic experts to help them but Homes has the brainpower and capacity to work out the most complex of situation while the police are still waiting for the post mortem.

After just one outing it looks like this new Holmes and Watson are set to be a classic pairing in the way that Basil Rathbones Holmes has become a classic of our time.

Tune in for more Sherlock next week on BBC1 at 8.00pm, when Sherlock and John solve the case of a mysterious and deadly cipher in The Blind Banker.
