Fifties Inspired Fashion

Hurrah, the fashionistas have finally come to their senses and given us some elegance in the style of the 50’s no doubt inspired by the success of Madmen set in the period. I was always told by Mother that if you hang onto something long enough it will be back in fashion - well in this case she was right - the Fifties are back. Being born well after the period, I have nostalgic memories of the fashions from old black and white photos, my Mother in full skirts with a nipped in waist, straight leg trousers teamed with neat cardi's - sadly it wouldn't matter if she did still have them as people seemed to have much smaller waists then or they endured tight corsets!

Having survived eighties fashion the first time around I was happy to learn that baggy shirts in bold checks and skin tight jeans with over-sized off the shoulder T shirts will be but a distant memory soon as two of the most influential brands in fashion — Prada and Louis Vuitton —show their Autumn / winter collections in Paris recently that evoke the spirit of the Fifties.

There will still be plenty of 80’s bad memories around (for those of us old enough to remember the first time around!) but don’t be disheartened, there are many pretty summer dresses and skirts to be had.  Team a full skirt in pretty florals with a neat crew neck cardi – try Laura Ashley or Cath Kidson for 50’s inspired pieces.

Don’t be afraid to go for the pretty floral look, it may feel a little girlie for jean wearing fans but you will soon love the subtle but sexy look a nipped dress will bring you – sleek and straight or full skirted depending on your tastes, they all look great.
