Chanel published a picture of a short, simple black dress in Vogue. It was calf-length, straight, and decorated only by a few diagonal lines. The little black dress was simple and accessible for women of all social classes. Vogue also said that the LBD would become “a sort of uniform for all women of taste.”It became a timeless classic and the answer to every womans"What should I wear question... it is a no-fail option and great for Christmas parties.
The most famous LBD is still Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s accessorised with pearls, see our feature coming soon in our new Spring2 magazine on Kelly Brooke dressed as the famous icon. In 2007, the very same dress sold in the US for almost £100,000. Another famous LBD worn by Miss Hepburn, a Chantilly lace cocktail dress by Hepburn's favorite designer Hubert de Givenchy worn in the 1966 film How to Steal a Million has just been sold at auction for £60,000 at La Galleria in central London. Around £260,000 was raised in total at the London Auction of dozens of Miss Hepburn's dresses, accessories and letters with half the profits going to charity.
Whether am Audrey Hepburn classic or a high street bargain, the LBD is suitable for all occasions, styles and sizes. Whether it is a £1500 designer number or a high street model at£30, a size 8 or a size 18, it is still a little black dress. And everyone wants to own at least one perfect little black dress.
Hemlines have gone up and down neck lines and fabrics have changed but it still remains a classic.
How to wear your LBD
Classic shape is knee length sleeveless sheath dress but try anything from a mini to floor length for classic sophistication
Look for styles to show off your shape, strapless for great shoulders, low back to show off a toned back or a wrap style for a classic pear shape.
Wear with some killer heels and matching sparkly bag.
If legs are tanned, keep them bare, or wear sheer tights for a dressy look.
Go for sparkly earrings and necklace, the simple black dress carries accessories well but be careful not to overdo it.
Treat yourself to a hairdo, go for an updo to show off a strapless dress
